Laser Removal of Pigmentation  and Birthmarks

Pigmentation can be due to many causes. The most common causes include sun damage, melasma, seborrhoeic keratosis, moles, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation etc. In most cases these are not harmful, but they can be of  cosmetic concern,

Birthmarks can be vascular i.e. made up of blood vessels, or they can be pigmented. Some such as epidermal naves are skin coloured but are rough on the surface.

There are many different types of lasers and IPLs available . Clearly making an accurate diagnosis is paramount in selecting the appropriate tool for the treatment.

At Canterbury Laser Clinic, you will have the assessment with a dermatologist who is a laser specialist. Further, the clinic has several systems such as LP Nd Yag, QS Nd Yag, Diode laser, Pulse Dye laser and IPLs in order to offer the most appropriate device for the diagnosis.  The appropriate use of either lasers or IPL will be assessed at the consultation.

How many sessions are required?

This again depends on the diagnosis. Some lesions can be removed in just one or two sessions but some such as a deep purple birthmark may take more than ten!

Certain lesions that can be treated in just one session include the so-called liver or age spots, benign lentigo and freckles. However, for lesions with deeper lying pigment, multiple treatment sessions may be necessary e.g. pigmented birthmarks, such as café-au-lait spots.

How often are treatments carried out?

Laser treatments are usually scheduled at 6 week intervals.

What is the treatment like?

You may experience a warm, stinging sensation in the area treated. It has been likened to an elastic band hitting the skin. The treatment usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes.

Are there any side effects of the treatment?

For pigmentation, immediately after treatment, the treated area becomes darker, crusts lightly and peels off over 1 to 2 weeks, leaving a pinkish area of new skin lasting several more weeks to a few months. Significant fading can continue for up to 6 months after treatment in some cases.

For vascular birthmarks, there can be signifiant bruising lasting 10-14 days.

How much does it cost?

Initial consultation:

With Dr Mark Hudson-Peacock, Consultant Dermatologist- £220

With Dr Alice Hudson-Peacock, Specialty Doctor in Dermatology,  including patch test if indicated- £150

Treatment price guide : small area on face- £150 per session to area size of one cheek- £350 per session

An accurate quote will be given at the consultation after the diagnosis is made and the treatment device chosen.
