Medical and Cosmetic Uses of Botox

Botox injection is available in many places in Kent. However, the Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic is one of very few place in Kent where all the Botoxâ treatments will be carried out only by experienced Dermatology doctors who have been offering such treatment for may years.

Botox  is the most recognised brand of Botulinum Toxin.  Other popular brands are Vistabel, Azzulure, Boccouture, and Xeomin, Dysport etc. Each distributor may claim that their product is superior but in reality, all these brands work in the same way and have the same effect.  From a cosmetic perspective, Botox is used to reduce lines and wrinkles, hence reducing the signs of ageing.

Botulinum Type A (BTX-A) was first described in the treatment of frown line wrinkles in 1992, more than 20 years ago, by 2 Canadian doctors. It received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002.  It has been used in the treatment of squints and blepharospasm since 1980’s and whilst treating patients with part facial spasms in a hospital in England, Botox is found to inhibit sweating, so this effect to stop armpit sweating was documented in 1993. Now Botox is a widely recognised, effective treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis. More recently in 2010, Botox was approved by the FDA for the treatment of chronic migraines. The latest claim of the benefits of Botox is that it can be used in the treatment of depression! In addition to these, there are many more medical uses of BTX-A.

Botulinum Type A works by blocking the realease of a chemical messager, acetycholine, across the nerve muscle junction, thereby weakening the muscle., softening the wrinkles. The effect for frown lines usually last 4 months, but can last up to 6 months.  It is also commonly used for crow’s feet wrinkles and forehead wrinkle. The effect of Botox  injections in armpit sweating usually lasts longer, 6-9 months.

The injection technique involves careful placing of tiny amounts of Botox into the specific muscle that needs to be relaxed, to soften the wrinkles concerned. The effect of Botox injections take 36-72 hours to be apparent. The procedure is quick, taking 15 minutes to do and when done properly, is a safe and effective treatment for dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines, crow’ s feet and forehead lines. For Armpit sweating the procedure is usually slightly longer as a starch Iodine test is used to identify the sweating glands and to mark out the area of treatment.

It is clear why Botox injections is so popular in Kent as an anti-aging treatment.  However, it is the lack of regulation that is giving the industry a bad name. At present, anyone can be offering this treatment! A recent NHS review states that they were surprised to find that this industry is largely unregulated despite serious risk of major damage and in some cases irreversible damage to patient’s health. You can be reassured that you will only be seen by experienced and qualified Skin doctors for your Botox treatments at the Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic in Kent.
