Botox ® Treatments: before and after images

before and after botox treatments-photos

Botox ® is an injectable drug that is used to relax the muscles. Botox injections have been used for cosmetic treatments to reduce lines and wrinkles since about 1990, and there are many clinical trials confirming its effectiveness and safety. We have been providing Botox treatments for many years in the clinic.

Botox® is also used for cosmetic reasons to help reduce sweating in the armpits and hands.

How does Botox® work?

It prevents the nerve signal from reaching the muscles to make it contract. Its effect is not permanent, gradually wearing off after a few months, so treatment with this agent needs to be repeated for the desired effect to be maintained. Botox® is a prescription only medicine (POM) and has a partial license for cosmetic use in this country. It should be only administered by trained medical professionals in a Care Quality Commission approved facility.

Who will Botox® injection treatments benefit?

Men and women who want to achieve a younger, healthier and fresher look. The best facial regions to treat are: frown line, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Great care needs to be taken if other areas are to be treated, such as the mouth and neck, and then, should only be treated by an experienced doctor. Botox® injections allow the precise and selective reduction in certain muscle movements, so the lines and wrinkles in these treated areas gradually soften resulting in a younger, fresher looking skin with fewer lines and wrinkles. The precise injection of the appropriate amount of Botox® is vitally important to ensure a good result with minimal risk. A Dermatologist with detailed knowledge of facial anatomy and years of experience in facial treatments and surgery would be the best person to seek advice from when considering such treatment.

Are Botox® injections painful?

No, they are not. Tiny needles are used to inject into the muscles, so only pin pricks may be felt. Most patients find the treatment very tolerable and virtually painless, however, for those not so good with needles, local anaesthetic cream can be used beforehand, but this needs to be applied for at least 30 minutes for the numbing effect to occur. Following the treatment, there may be a little redness or bruising at the site of injections, which usually settles within 24-48 hours.

What are the possible side effects following Botox® treatment?

Side-effects from Botox® are most commonly slight redness, bruising and swelling, that will settle in a few days. Some patients can get a transient mild headache. Drooping of the eyebrows or puffiness under eyes can also occur, but these will be considered and risks minimised.  In our experience, other side effects are very rare due to our highly-qualified medical skin specialists with many years experience.

How quickly does Botox® take to work and can I return to a normal life straightaway?

Patients typically return to a normal working and social life immediately after treatment. The Botox® effect is not immediate, but gradually takes effect over the first few days but can take up to 2 weeks to have its optimal effect.

Who is suitable for this treatment?

Men and women may be treated. It is suitable for most adults except for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Please inform us of any medical conditions you may have or medications that you are currently taking.

How long will the effects of treatment last?

The Botox® effect continues typically for 4 months. Studies by Carruthers & al (March 2001) show that most practitioners would recommend an initial course of Botox® treatments every 4 months for the 1st year. It now appears that after this time the treatment interval may be lengthier and some patients only need to return twice a year to maintain results.

Does Botox® remove all facial expressions?

No, our experienced doctors have been highly trained and will be able to fine tune the placement of the injections to give a natural expression.

Can Botox® be combined with other treatments?

Dermal fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Perfectha etc can complement Botox treatment. Other treatments can be combined including various topical creams e.g. retinol, microdermabrasion, laser rejuvenation and medical skin needling techniques.

What else can Botox® treat?

Botox® can be used very successfully in the control of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), in the underarms and hands. Each treatment has an average effect of 6 to 7 months, but can last up to 15 months in some cases. Botox can also be useful in relieving migraines and tension headaches.
