Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing -how does it work?

Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing only treat small zones within a target area, allowing a quicker recovery. This technology was first introduced in 2003 as the Fraxel™ laser machine. At the Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic, we offer the 1540™ Fractional device from Palomar. This is a 1540nm erbium glass fibre non-ablative laser, which is delivered to the skin in tiny micro beams, in combination with contact cooling of the skin’s surface.

The 1540™ laser can penetrate up to a depth of 1mm into the skin, whilst also leaving the skin’s surface intact, creating tiny columns of treated tissue which are surrounded by the healthy tissue.

What are the side effects?

For several hours afterwards the skin will feel tight and have the appearance of a “sunburned” look. The skin will continue to look “pinkish” for 2 – 7 days and any swelling, which should be minimal, usually disappears after 1 – 3 days. As the skin heals itself, you will find mild to moderate skin flaking, which may last for up to 2 weeks.

How many sessions will I need?

A course of 3 – 5 sessions at monthly intervals is usually recommended. Optimal improvement after fractional treatment is usually visible in about 2 – 3 months as collagen remodelling and skin tightening continues.

What is the cost?

The lip and chin area , or crow’s feet area start at £250 per session.

A patch test is required at £100 which may be carried out at the time of consultation if appropriate.
