Are all lasers and IPLs the same?
Laser is a beam of light of a specific wavelength. IPL is a broadband light and is NOT a laser. The laser wavelength depends on the target colour that we are treating; eg for hair removal we need to have a wavelength that is absorbed by the dark hair pigment, for spider veins removal we need a wavelength to target the blood vessels. You can appreciate that each laser is very specific as it only targets one colour. The result is therefore superior to other methods due to the perfect match between the laser light and target. IPL is far less specific. It is a flashlamp in which filters are used to narrow the light to a wavelength band to match the target. It cannot be as specific as a laser light, hence IPLs cannot treat the target so specifically as a laser can. The end result? Lasers have been shown in many studies to be more effective than IPLs for hair removal. Generally, several sessions of IPL are needed for the same result that can be achieved with just one laser session!
