CYST TREATMENTS INCLUDE:

cyst removal clinic IN CANTERBURY & KENT

Cysts are small fluid-filled lumps which can often be found under the skin. They can occur for a variety of reasons and their size, colour, and shape will depend on the type of cyst present. Epidermoid cysts most commonly occur on the face, neck, chest, shoulders and around the genitals whereas pilar cysts are mostly found on the scalp due to forming around hair follicles. Often these types of cysts disappear without treatment, however, it is worth getting a medical opinion if you are concerned or if they become tender or infected.

HOW ARE SKIN CYSTS TREATED?

Cysts are relatively a common medical condition, but they are usually nothing to worry about and can be left alone if they don’t pose any problems. Bursting your cyst can only worsen the situation due to the increased risk of infection spreading or having a higher probability of the cyst growing back. If it is causing pain, or embarrassment or your doctor has recommended that it should be removed, then seeking treatment from a professional dermatologist is highly advised. Inflamed cysts or acne cysts typically react well to cortisone injections administered by a dermatologist and larger cysts are usually removed via surgical techniques depending on their size and location. Lastly, if multiple cysts continue to form regularly then effective oral treatments such as retinoic acid may be prescribed by our Specialist Dermatologists in order to provide relief and improvement for patients.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Cysts are generally not a major medical concern, but they may swell up causing disfigurement, pain and every so often discharge their contents. Occasionally they can burst giving rise to sunken scars and scalp cysts can cause hair loss in the area in from which the cyst arises.

In some cases, cysts will go away on their own. Holding a warm compress such as a flannel against the cyst can help it to heal and reduce any inflammation you may be experiencing.

You should never try to pop the cyst as this can lead to infection.

If you are worried about a cyst or would like to find out the options to get it removed, arrange an appointment with a consultant dermatologist.

If you have an infected cyst, you may be offered antibiotics. A consultant dermatologist is also able to remove the cyst by cutting the skin and draining the fluid under a local anaesthetic.

Skin cysts are very rarely dangerous, however there are other types of cysts which can be a cause for concern. These include Ovarian cysts and pilonidal cysts.
