What is Cryotherapy?
Conditions Treated with Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a versatile treatment method offering solutions for various skin conditions by utilising liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy problematic tissues. Below are some common applications of cryotherapy:
- Actinic Keratoses – This treatment is effective for precancerous skin lesions known as actinic keratoses. Cryotherapy destroys abnormal cells and stimulates the growth of healthy, new skin.
- Freckles and Solar Lentigos – Cryotherapy swiftly and painlessly removes freckles and solar lentigos by ‘freezing off’ the lesion with cold liquid nitrogen.
- Warts and Verrucas – By freezing warts and verrucas with liquid nitrogen, cryotherapy causes the affected tissue to die and eventually fall off, offering an effective removal method.
- Skin tags – Cryotherapy can also be used to remove skin tags. The process involves applying liquid nitrogen to the skin tag, which freezes and destroys the tissue.
- Psoriasis – For temporary relief from psoriasis symptoms, cryotherapy reduces inflammation and itchiness, providing soothing comfort.
- Acne – Cryotherapy may assist in reducing acne-related inflammation and targeting bacteria responsible for breakouts, promoting clearer skin.
- Seborrhoeic Keratosis – These harmless but often irritating growths are treated by freezing. This causes them to dry out and flake away, unveiling healthier skin.
- Sebaceous Lesions – Cryotherapy effectively shrinks or removes overactive oil gland lesions by freezing and eliminating the affected tissue.
- Cherry Angiomas (Campbell de Morgan Spots) – These red vascular marks can be treated by freezing the blood vessels, leading to the shrinking or disappearance of the angiomas.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR CRYOTHERAPY?
Before your cryotherapy session, make sure the treatment area is clean and avoid using any lotions, creams, or makeup on that day. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. Inform your doctor if you have a history of cold sensitivity, circulation problems, or delayed wound healing. While no major preparation is usually needed, always follow any specific guidance provided by your doctor.
WHAT ARE CRYOTHERAPY'S SIDE EFFECTS?
Cryotherapy can cause pain or discomfort during or after the treatment. The treated area may become red, swollen, and blistered. This is a normal part of the healing process and usually subsides within a few days. In rare cases, cryotherapy can cause scarring, especially if the treated area is large or deep. There might also be some pigmentation changes in the treated areas in comparison to the surrounding areas. The skin at and around the treatment site may lighten or darken in colour, especially in darker-skinned people. Although rare, there is a risk of infection following cryotherapy. It’s important to keep the treated area clean and dry to reduce this risk. Risks and benefits are discussed with your dermatologist before treatment.
HOW MANY CRYOTHERAPY SESSION ARE REQUIRED?
It is possible to get benefits from just one cryotherapy session, but the most effective is when used regularly. Our team of specialist dermatologists can provide guidance on the best treatment approach.
